Anesthesiology

At Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital, our anesthesiology specialists are leaders in surgical anesthesia and pain management. Our team works hard to ensure your comfort and safety whether you need pain management for a chronic or acute condition or if you need anesthesiology services before, during or after a surgery or procedure, particularly in the areas of heart and vascular care, orthopedic surgery and women’s health. We put our patients first by maximizing comfort and minimizing recovery time.

In the hospital, our anesthesiologists provide services for a wide variety of patients, including around-the-clock care for emergency procedures and traumatic injuries. In outpatient clinics, our long-term pain management options help with chronic pain.

Our anesthesiologists use the latest knowledge to provide inpatient and outpatient anesthesiology services to nearly 14,000 patients a year. Our partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine allows our physicians to stay on the forefront of medicine and give you more options for sedation and pain relief.

Inpatient & Outpatient Services

At IU Ball Memorial Hospital, we provide anesthesiology services for all surgeries and many procedures performed at the hospital, such as endoscopies.

Our services include surgical anesthesia, outpatient anesthesia, acute pain management for injuries such as a fractured rib and chronic pain management procedures, including nerve blocks to treat back and neck pain.

We also work with patients to manage their chronic pain through the IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital Pain Center.

Cardiac Anesthesia

If your heart or vascular condition requires surgery or another cardiac procedure, our anesthesiologists are experts in providing the most advanced care. We work with your cardiac surgeon to deliver the proper anesthesiology care during coronary bypass and valve repair surgeries.

We also work with our cardiologists performing procedures such as cardiac catheterizations, angioplasties and stent placements and other heart and vascular procedures performed in the catheterization lab or the electrophysiology lab—such as those used to treat atrial fibrillation.

Obstetric Anesthesia

We collaborate with your physician during childbirth to make the experience as pain free as you choose. Our anesthesiologists provide pain management services and expert care to more than 1,800 deliveries each year, including epidural anesthesia as well as sedation for cesarean section (C-section) deliveries.
