Through our partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine,we have access to the latest treatments and clinical trials.
When the most advanced treatment is needed, we can refer you to the Indiana University Health physicians in Indianapolis. At these facilities, we have the technology to provide innovative surgical care, including lung transplants.

The Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital Pulmonary Function Lab provides specialized lung function testing for children and adults. Our services give physicians the most advanced tools necessary to assist in the diagnosis and assessment of lung and respiratory system problems.
We offer both inpatient and outpatient testing services, including:
- Lung volumes via plethysmography and diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO)
- Diffusion capacity
- Pre-post bronchodilator studies
- Broncho provocation
- Disability testing
When medical management is not enough, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital offers the latest surgical treatment options to treat your pulmonary or respiratory condition, including video-assisted thoracoscopy and da Vinci® System robot assisted thoracic surgery.
Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is individually tailored to meet patients' needs through education, exercise and emotional support that help stabilize pulmonary diseases such as asthma, emphysema, cystic fibrosis or chronic bronchitis. If you have ever been diagnosed with a chronic lung disease, experienced shortness of breath during physical activities like walking or during periods of stress or anxiety, or if you become too tired to complete most of your daily activities, you may be a candidate for pulmonary rehabilitation.
Our innovative treatment methods are offered on inpatient, outpatient and maintenance phases and individually tailored to meet your needs. Admission to the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program requires a physician referral.
Goals for the program include:
- Improving quality of life
- Achieving independent function of daily living
- Controlling and alleviating symptoms
- Decreasing psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, panic and depression
- Increasing exercise tolerance
- Returning you to employment when possible
- Reducing exacerbations, emergency room visits and hospitalizations
This comprehensive program includes initial assessments, exercise training, education and follow-up. Examples of educational topics include:
- Coping with chronic illnesses
- Dealing with stress, anxiety and panic
- Anatomy/Physiology of respiratory system
- Respiratory equipment
- Learning to prevent infections
- Benefits of exercise
- Home exercise program
- Harmonica exercises
Sessions are conducted in the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department of IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, located on the lower level in the John W. Fisher Heart Center. In addition, the Better Breathers Support Group and the Maintenance Exercise Program are designed to complement the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.
