Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive weight loss surgery that is gaining in popularity. This surgery does not change the normal digestive process in the way that a gastric bypass does.

Sleeve gastrectomy controls your hunger by greatly shrinking the size of your stomach. With this procedure, approximately 80 percent of your stomach is removed and a small vertical pouch in the shape of a banana remains. Over time, the sleeve expands to hold one cup of food or liquid. You eat less because you feel full after eating small amounts of food.

You are a good candidate for minimally invasive sleeve gastrectomy if you are severely obese with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above. If your health includes others conditions such as hypertensionType 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and/or osteoarthritis a BMI of 35 or higher is appropriate.

Serious medical conditions that accompany obesity generally improve with weight loss.

Sleeve gastrectomy surgery is a good option for patients who are too overweight for other bariatric surgeries.

At Indiana University Health, our affiliation with the IU School of Medicine Division of General Surgery keeps us in touch with the latest advances in bariatric surgery. Our surgeons train others in the latest techniques in sleeve gastrectomy.

To ensure the best weight loss outcome for you, we devote time to educating you about sleeve gastrectomy and the lifestyle changes you need to make. If you eat healthy foods, control your portion sizes and exercise after surgery, you lose weight and feel better.
