Each year, the last saturday in September is set aside to promote family health and fitness. This year, on September 29th, families across the nation will celebrate the 16th annual Family Health and Fitness Day in an effort to move toward healthier, happier families.
As all families know, one of the biggest challenges to a healthy lifestyle is finding the time for fitness. With schedules full of work and school activities, and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle focused on electronics and television, it can be difficult to get everyone on board.
The best way to ensure the entire family will participate is to combine exercise with activities you already enjoy for a fun way to get healthy together:
- Hit the Road: walk the dog, run around the block or sign up for a 5K together
- Get back to nature: pack a picnic and go hiking or rock climbing as a family
- Roll with it: go biking, roller blading or skateboarding
- Work together: tackle some household chores such as raking leaves or washing the car
Getting fit together is not just a terrific bonding experience for families--when parents take an interest in family fitness, it sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy habits.
