September is Healthy Aging Month and it’s time to celebrate by making sure you are doing everything you can to not only add years to your life but to make the most out of those years by being as healthy as possible.
Healthy Aging Month was created to give seniors and those soon-to-be seniors encouragement in taking little steps that can greatly affect quality their quality of life into the future. We will be offering this series on what you can do to encourage healthy aging.
Being healthy doesn’t happen by accident. It takes knowledge and the ability to make the right choices. But that doesn’t mean it has to be hard. Believe it or not, it can even be fun. Here are two helpful ways to promote healthy aging that you can begin this September.
A sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy for anyone and seniors who do not exercise make more hospital visits and take more medication than those who exercise regularly. Taking a daily walk or stretching can help keep muscles firm and encourage stamina and strength. Exercising, such as low-impact aerobics or light weightlifting should be done for at least 30 minutes 2-4 times per week.
For some seniors the fear of falling keeps them from exercising. The truth is that balance, stamina and strength are all encouraged by exercising and will reduce your risk of falling. View some FAQs on Joint Replacement at IU Health.
For those who need help starting an exercise program IU Health offers Silver & Fit programs, which are also available for Medicare beneficiaries. Members can select exercise centers that offer options such as Jazzercise, yoga, and pilates. For more information on Silver & Fit visit SilverandFit.com or call 1.877.427.4788.
When you make the choice to begin exercising it is always a good idea to get more people involved. Exercising with another person or a group helps everyone remain accountable to their regimen as well as makes the time seem less like a workout and more like hanging out with friends.
