Being healthy doesn’t happen by accident. It takes knowledge and the ability to make the right choices. But that doesn’t mean it has to be hard. Believe it or not, it can even be fun. Here are two helpful ways to promote healthy aging that you can begin this September.

Exercise

A sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy for anyone and seniors who do not exercise make more hospital visits and take more medication than those who exercise regularly. Taking a daily walk or stretching can help keep muscles firm and encourage stamina and strength. Exercising, such as low-impact aerobics or light weightlifting should be done for at least 30 minutes 2-4 times per week.

For some seniors the fear of falling keeps them from exercising. The truth is that balance, stamina and strength are all encouraged by exercising and will reduce your risk of falling. View some FAQs on Joint Replacement at IU Health.
