Heart disease is often thought about as a man’s disease, but recent studies show that heart disease is actually the number one killer of women in America. February is American Heart Association Month and the perfect time to show your sweetheart how much you care by learning to recognize the symptoms of heart attack in yourself and your significant other.
According to the National Institute for Health, major symptoms prior to their heart attack include:
For Women
- Unusual fatigue
- Sleep disturbance
- Shortness of breath
- Indigestion
- Anxiety
Many women reported symptoms occurring as much as month before a heart attack.
For Men
- Shortness of breath
- Weakness
- Unusual fatigue
- Cold sweat
- Dizziness
Of course, for both men and women, the basic symptoms of heart attack include chest tightness or pressure and/or pain in the chest, neck, jaw, arms or back. Never ignore any possible symptoms of a heart attack!
Together, you can take action and prevent heart disease through healthy habits, including:
- Exercise
- Healthy diet
- Regular visits to your healthcare provider to check blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels
- Stop smoking
