The 2013 Trusler Lectureship in Pediatric Plastic Surgery

The Harold M. Trusler Visiting Lectureship in Clinical Plastic Surgery is an annual event held in honor of Doctor Trusler, a plastic surgeon who was integral in establishing the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine.  Each year a national leader in pediatric plastic surgery is invited to give a Grand Rounds lecture and participate in educational sessions with our medical students, surgical residents and fellows, and the Plastic Surgery medical and nursing staff.

This year we were pleased to welcome Doctor Joseph Losee as our visiting lecturer.  Doctor Losee is  Professor and Executive Vice-Chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He also is Chief of the Division of Pediatric Plastic Surgery, Director of the Pittsburgh Cleft-Craniofacial Center at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, and Director of the Reconstructive Transplantation Program.  In addition, he serves as the Program Director for both the Plastic Surgery Residency and the Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship.  Doctor Losee holds many leadership positions as an academic plastic surgeon and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and 20 book chapters.  He is the editor of “Comprehensive Cleft Care”, the authoritative text on cleft surgery.

This year’s event was held on May 22, 2013.  Doctor Losee presented a Grand Rounds Lecture, Pediatric Facial Fractures, to approximately 125 medical staff of all pediatric disciplines at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.  The rest of the day was spent with a smaller group of 20 plastic surgery residents, faculty, and nursing staff. Doctor Losee presented three additional lectures covering the topics of hand transplantation, cleft palate surgery, and maintaining meaning in medicine.  He also critiqued the Plastic Surgery residents who presented challenging surgical cases for Doctor Losee’s review and input.

The Trusler Visiting Lectureship is a highlight of the academic year for the Plastic Surgery residents and fellows who train at Riley Children’s Hospital.  The lectureship provides the unique opportunity to learn from and intellectually interact with a master surgeon.

The Cleft and Craniofacial Team participates in learning opportunites such as the Trusler Visiting Lectureship in Clinical Plastic Surgery in our on-going commitment to patient care and research, as well to fulfill our mission of promoting craniofacial awareness and education to medical students and residents-in-training at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
