Emergency Medicine

When you are faced with a medical emergency, we are here to provide experienced and effective treatment. Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital Emergency Medicine offers advanced emergency services to the surrounding communities. Our emergency department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All patients are accepted for care, regardless of ability to pay.

The Emergency Department at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital is located on the northwest corner of the hospital and can be easily accessed directly from Second Street. Free, covered parking is available just outside the emergency entrance.                              

Our multidisciplinary team of emergency medicine providers includes physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners that care for patients with all types of acute injuries or illnesses. Our Emergency Medicine providers work closely with specialists in orthopedics, cardiology, neurosurgery, cancer, pulmonology, and other fields to provide comprehensive emergency care. We have access to advanced diagnostic tools, and lab and imaging services to make quick and accurate diagnoses.

Emergency Medical Services

IU Health Bloomington Hospital Emergency Medical Services is the only 911 provider for Monroe County. It provides multiple services to meet all patients’ and customers’ needs. With access to the latest equipment, our emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics provide high-quality patient care. All staff members are required go through rigorous educational training and practical skill testing. 

Certified Personnel

Our highly trained staff of paramedics and EMTs ensures that at least one paramedic is on every ambulance and that an experienced paramedic supervisor is on every shift for additional assistance and specialized expertise.

All certified personnel must go through annual skills competencies including:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
  • Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals (PEPP) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Some staff members have additional certifications such as:

  • Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS)
  • Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services (GEMS)
  • Critical Care Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (CCEMT-P)
  • Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
