G.O.A.L. (Get Onboard Active Living) is a free family-focused, community approach to decreasing childhood overweight/obesity and encouraging healthy lifestyles for children and their families through education and activity.
The G.O.A.L. program is cooperation with community partners (Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital, Southern Indiana Pediatrics, Bloomington Parks and Recreation, Monroe County YMCA, Monroe County Community School Corporation, Richland Bean-Blossom Community School Corporation, The Office of Community Health Engagement, Indiana University and The Department of Kinesiology, Indiana University) providing medical, behavioral, nutrition, and fitness education and support.
The mission of the G.O.A.L. program is to provide kids and families the opportunity to receive education and support on nutrition, fitness and behavioral habits in order to make positive life-long changes for an active lifestyle. The goals of the program are to teach and encourage participants and their families to:
- Maintain a healthy weight over the long term
- Follow a healthy, balanced diet, even in difficult situations (e.g. family gatherings, holidays, and parties)
- Identify/avoid high-calorie, low-nutrient foods
- Develop better exercise habits
- Reduce sedentary behaviors
- Build a stronger familial relationships
- Pursue other healthy interests
Children (ages 6-18 years) with BMI’s at or above the 85th percentile are referred by their primary care physician.G.O.A.L. program has three cohorts a year starting in January, May, and September.
