How We Can Help
Type 1 Diabetes Treatment Information
Our team of healthcare professionals works with you to develop a personalized Type 1 diabetes care plan. Treatment often includes:
- Insulin therapy. Daily insulin treatment is an important part of managing Type 1 diabetes. The purpose of this therapy is to replace your body’s natural insulin and keep your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible. Insulin treatment may take the form of multiple daily injections. Insulin comes in a wide variety of long-, short- and intermediate-acting types, allowing us to develop a regimen that addresses your specific needs. Methods for administering insulin include syringes, insulin pens and insulin pumps.
- Diabetes education. Our diabetes professionals help you develop the knowledge and skills to manage your specific needs and achieve the best possible control of Type 1 diabetes. In addition to the patients we serve within IU Health, we receive many referrals from physicians throughout the community because of our team’s experience and expertise. We provide both one-on-one and classroom-style sessions, and our educators sometimes go off-site for health fairs and other events. Topics of Type 1 diabetes education include monitoring your blood sugar levels, treating low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), planning meals, taking your medication properly, traveling with diabetes, managing sick days and avoiding long-term health problems. Because diabetes affects not only patients but entire families, we offer a wide variety of educational services for family members.
- Technology. We use advanced technology whenever possible to help you achieve the best possible glucose control. This includes the latest methods for monitoring your blood sugar, such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). This system uses a sensor to monitor blood sugar levels in real time. Another emerging technology is sensor-augmented insulin pump therapy, which combines CGM with an insulin pump. Web-based data management is also becoming a key element in communications between patients and their healthcare teams.
