Neurodiagnostic Technologist

Education

What They Do

Neurodiagnostic (ND) technologists perform tests that assist neurologists in detecting, diagnosing and treating neurological disorders. They work with patients who have a variety of disorders that affect the central and peripheral nervous systems, such as strokes, seizures, head trauma, nerve and muscle disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, developmental disorders and Alzheimer's, to name a few. ND technologists typically work in neurophysiology departments of hospitals. They may also work in operating rooms, patient care units, doctor offices and sleep labs.

ND technologists take patient histories, apply appropriate recording electrodes, record nerve and cell impulses and prepare documentation for the neurologist's interpretation. They perform the following procedures:

  • Electroencephalograms (EEGs)
  • Auditory, visual & somatosensory Evoked Potentials (EPs)
  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCSs)
  • Surgical monitoring
  • Polysomnographs (sleep studies)
  • Long-term EEG Monitoring (LTM)
