Education

Applications for the Radiation Therapy program must be submitted by February 3, 2014 for graduation in July 2015. After the February 2014 due date, the Radiation Therapy program will no longer be offered. Please contact Lisa Smith at 765.285.8368 with any questions.

What They Do

Radiation therapists are highly skilled professionals qualified by education to use radiation to assist in treating cancer and other medical conditions. Radiation therapy departments are located mainly in hospitals. Employment opportunities also exist in free-standing therapy clinics, commercial sales, education and management. The responsibilities of a radiation therapist can include:

  • Performing radiation safety and quality control procedures
  • Preparing immobilization devices
  • Operating equipment
  • Positioning patients for procedures
  • Providing basic nursing and medical care
  • Preparing data for physician interpretation

14 months, primarily full-time days

Summary, Course of Study

The radiation therapy program is sponsored by Ball State University. The program is divided into two phases and usually takes two to three years to complete. The first, or pre-clinical, phase of the program takes place on the Ball State University campus and includes course work in the sciences and the University Core Curriculum program. Students may elect to take the pre-clinical courses at another university, provided the courses are considered an equivalent by Ball State University. The second, or clinical, phase of the program is offered in Indianapolis at IU Health Methodist Hospital with rotations to other clinical affiliate sites.
