What They Do

Radiographers are highly skilled professionals qualified by education to perform X-ray procedures to assist in diagnosing and treating medical conditions. In hospitals, radiographers can work in a radiology department, surgery, the emergency room, and at a patient's bedside using mobile equipment. Employment opportunities also exist in private offices, independent imaging centers, industry, and other imaging modalities (CT, ultrasound, MRI, etc.), commercial sales, education and management. The responsibilities of a radiographer can include:

  • Performing radiation safety and quality control procedures
  • Preparing and administering contrast media
  • Operating imaging equipment
  • Positioning patients for procedures
  • Evaluating radiographs for diagnostic quality;
  • Providing basic nursing and medical care
  • Preparing data for physician interpretation

14 months; primarily full time days

Summary, Course of Study

The radiography program is sponsored by Ball State University. The program is divided into two phases and usually takes two to three years to complete. The first, or pre-clinical, phase of the program takes place on the Ball State University campus and includes course work in the sciences and the University Core Curriculum program. Students may elect to take the pre-clinical courses at another university, provided the courses are considered an equivalent by Ball State University. The second, or clinical, phase of the program is offered in Indianapolis at IU Health Methodist Hospital with rotations to other clinical affiliate sites.
