Indiana Poison Center

A poison is a substance that can harm your body when you ingest, absorb, inject or inhale it. The Indiana Poison Center is an emergency telephone service and information resource center that provides immediate help from poison experts. The center takes calls from the public and healthcare professionals 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Many poisons are common items, including consumer products that are safe when used correctly. Examples of potential poisons include:

  • Cleaning products
  • Prescription or over-the-counter medications taken incorrectly or by the wrong person
  • Illegal drugs
  • Pesticides (insect killers)
  • Yard chemicals, such as fertilizers and herbicides (weed killers)
  • Carbon monoxide gas
  • Plants
  • Venom from snakes and insects
  • Metals, such as mercury and lead

Poisoning can cause temporary symptoms, such as skin rash and vomiting, or it can result in long-term harm, such as coma or brain damage. In some cases, it can lead to death. Other possible symptoms include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Dilated pupils
  • Sores around the mouth
  • Drooling or dry mouth
  • Confusion

If someone has collapsed, is having seizures or is not breathing, call 911 and then call the Indiana Poison Center. Otherwise, call us at 1.800.222.1222. Bring the patient and the product to the phone with you and be prepared to answer questions to help us assess the case, such as how the patient is doing, what product was taken and how much was taken. The Specialist in Poison Information will guide you in caring for the patient at home or going to the emergency department.

The Indiana Poison Center has specially trained nurses and pharmacists—known as Specialists in Poison Information—available at all times by phone. If you are concerned that an exposure MAY have occurred, call us immediately. There is no charge to call, and we can help you decide whether you need to go to the emergency department or your situation can be safely managed at home. Fortunately, most poisoning incidents are not life threatening and can be resolved at home with the help of an Indiana Poison Center expert.

You can also call with general, nonemergency questions about potentially poisonous substances.
