James A. Wheeler, MD PhD

Director of Radiation Oncology

Dr. James Wheeler is a board-certified radiation oncologist and serves as director of the radiation oncology program. Dr. Wheeler has extensive experience in the latest techniques for treating cancer. He is active in the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and is supportive of treating patients on clinical trials. He frequently uses intensity modulated radiation therapy to help decrease the side effects and increase the cure rates from radiation therapy.

Dr. Wheeler was instrumental in bringing state-of-the-art TomoTherapy to the Center for Cancer Care. His expertise also includes PET/CT directed radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and brachytherapy. His work has been featured in numerous medical journals, including the International Journal of Radiation Oncology and Radiation Oncology Investigations and Cancer. Dr. Wheeler served as assistant professor in the Division of Radiation Oncology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
