As one of the highest-volume heart and vascular programs in the United States, we understand quality isn’t necessarily measured by quantity. Numerous studies have shown that there is no substitute for experience. Indiana University Health Cardiovascular treats more heart and vascular patients than any other program in Indiana. IU Health Cardiovascular provides comprehensive services and is also a state and regional referral resource for the most complex, advanced heart, lung, and vascular disease problems. We encompass a rich tradition of providing cutting-edge care, including having performed the first private hospital cardiac transplant in the world, developed the technology that led to ultrasound of the heart, and being the first to invent and develop an implantable cardioverter.
IU Health Cardiovascular, in association with the Indiana University School of Medicine – one of the nation’s top-ranked academic teaching hospitals – is at the forefront of care, offering patients:
- The most advanced heart and vascular care in the state, backed up by years of experience in successfully implementing new life-saving techniques
- A broad spectrum of care, from the most common case to the most complex, through every subsequent stage of treatment and recovery
- Multidisciplinary specialists, collaborating to deliver comprehensive treatment options for whole body health
- Level One Emergency Programs that assure coordination and speed when you are faced with an emergency
- Communication processes that keep your family physician informed at every stage of your care
There’s simply no substitute for experience. Facilities alone don’t produce great patient outcomes. IU Health Cardiovascular has both premier facilities and highly experienced heart and vascular care staff. With scores of state and national “firsts” in both pediatric and adult heart and vascular services, we treat the most complex cases – before birth and every day afterwards.
IU Health Cardiovascular provides comprehensive treatments—our highly skilled physicians excel at treating patients with the most common to the most complex conditions.
Aortic disease is a potentially life-threatening condition, typically existing without showing symptoms. The specialists at IU Health Cardiovascular are dedicated to finding the best course of treatment for each individual patient – from aortic disease management to complex endovascular surgery.
The IU Health cardiac rehabilitation program is a structured inpatient and outpatient program designed to help patients recover from cardiac events or procedures. The clinical team includes physicians, exercise physiologists, registered nurses and registered dietitians who collaborate to educate and guide patients through the three-phase program. The team treats each patient with the same goals in mind – to improve heart health and enhance the patient’s return to a healthy lifestyle.
The cardiothoracic transplant team at IU Health has one over-arching goal: to provide the highest quality care and services for our heart transplant, lung transplant, adult congenital and ventricular assist device patients. We do that with a commitment to the latest technology, a team approach to patient care and to continuous quality improvement. And it is this commitment that has led to our national recognition as a cardiothoracic transplant center of excellence.
CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
The Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) program at IU Health Cardiovascular provides a lifetime care program for those born with congenital heart disease. The ACHD program’s multidisciplinary team includes cardiology subspecialists, pulmonary hypertension specialists, high-risk obstetricians, anesthesiologists and cardiovascular surgeons. Close collaboration between the ACHD program and Riley pediatric cardiology allows a seamless continuum of treatment throughout adolescence and into adulthood.
CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE
Coronary Artery Disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in the United States. Our specialists at IU Health Cardiovascular collaborate with each patient to find the management or treatment plan to best fits each individual. From disease management to complex surgery, we are dedicated to increasing the heart health of our patients.
Diagnostic testing allows our IU Health Cardiovascular specialists to accurately assess the patient’s disease or condition. Armed with this information, physicians can comprehensively plan your heart care treatment accordingly. At IU Health Cardiovascular, we offer a full range of testing methods, from traditional echocardiography to advanced catheterization.
Heart failure is one of the most common causes of hospitalization in adult patients, and a major cause of morbidity. For patients with advanced or recurrent heart failure, the Advanced Heart Care Program at IU Health offers an innovative multidisciplinary approach for the evaluation, treatment and follow-up. This program includes the continuum of in-and out patient components, along with the services of pharmacists, nurses, social workers, cardiologists and surgeons.
For selected patients with advanced heart failure, IU Health offers additional advanced therapies, including biventricular pacing, ventricular assist device (VAD) and cardiac transplantation. Our VAD program is certified by The Joint Commission for destination VAD Therapy.
HEART RHYTHM SERVICES
Although rate control and medications are typically first-line treatments, other interventions have improved efficacy in managing and restoring a regular heartbeat in select patients. IU Health Cardiovascular has internationally recognized leaders in the full range of treatment options—from medication to electrophysiology and surgical procedures. Together, we will determine the optimal management plan for each individual patient.
With an annual volume of over 3,500 diagnostic catheterizations and 1,400 primary coronary interventions, IU Health Cardiovascular offers the highest level of patient care found only in a comprehensive heart center. No matter what the condition, each patient is given the same high level of attention to detail in determining, and executing, optimal treatment strategies.
PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE
At IU Health Cardiovascular, we want to help you understand the risks, symptoms and treatments of Peripheral Vascular Disease. Our nationally recognized doctors make the commitment to put patients first. You can be confident you have selected a team of highly-skilled physicians with your best interests in mind.
VALVULAR HEART DISEASE
Patients may live with undiagnosed congenital or acquired valve disease much of their lives. As patients get older, they may mistakenly feel those symptoms are simply a “normal” part of aging. IU Health Cardiovascular can help avoid a lifetime of unnecessarily compromised health. We are the only teaching program in the state for valve disease, and our multidisciplinary approach ensures that everything from initial evaluation to treatment selection leads to better outcomes.
Our long-standing expertise and participation in clinical trials gives us access to every available option for restoring vascular health, including endovascular, bypass and other interventions. As Indiana’s largest referral center for vascular emergencies, the surgical specialists at IU Health Cardiovascular have the expertise and the experience to take on the most complex cases.
The IU Health Cardiovascular team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and clinical specialists, are nationally recognized and lead the state in implementing innovative procedures and providing premier patient care. From diagnosis to surgery to recovery, our expert physicians and specialists work hand in hand with leading researchers from the IU School of Medicine to deliver the latest treatment options and better outcomes.
