Desensitization for Kidney Transplant

Guest: Dr. William Goggins

Some patients needing kidney transplants have to wait much longer than others because of their sensitization to human leukocyte antigen (HLA). The HLA system helps the body fight off infection or foreign substances. When a patient has become HLA sensitized, he or she has developed antibodies to fight off another person’s antigens, perhaps as a result of a blood transfusion, pregnancy, or prior transplant. Dr. William Goggins, Kidney Transplant Surgical Director at Indiana University Health, discusses new desensitization protocols that allow kidney transplantation for patients who were previously ineligible.
