Liver Transplant for Hepatitis C

Guest: Dr. Paul Kwo

Hepatitis C is an infection that 75% of the time remains asymptomatic for decades. Because of this, the virus can go undetected until the liver starts showing signs of the disease and becomes severely damaged with scarring. If there is evidence that quality of life is compromised by liver disease due to Hepatitis C, a liver transplant may be indicated. Dr. Paul Kwo, Medical Director of the Adult Liver Transplant Program at Indiana University Health, discusses when and for whom a liver transplantation should be considered, as well as the benefits and risks of surgery and immunosuppressive medications.
