Lung Allocation & Who is Transplanted

Guest: Dr. John M. Reynolds

In the past, there was a high wait-list mortality for a lung transplant. In May of 2005 a new lung allocation system was implemented in an effort to move sicker patients to the top of the list to be transplanted sooner, balancing the urgency of lung patients with the likelihood of survival following transplant. Dr. John Reynolds, Medical Director of Indiana University Health Lung Transplant Program, discusses how the lung allocation scoring system prioritizes potential lung transplant candidates, and gives his thoughts on how effective the system is.
