Ventricular Assisted Device: Timing Considerations

Guest: Dr. Thomas Wozniak

Currently, 3 to 5 million people per year suffer from heart failure in the United States; of which one-third suffers from Class III or Class IV heart failure. When the heart fails, it loses the ability to pump blood around the body. Ventricular Assist Device, or VAD, is a device that effectively takes over the pumping of the heart. Dr. Thomas Wozniak, Surgical Director of Indiana University Health Thoracic Transplant Program, discusses timing considerations for VADs and eventual cardiac transplantation.
