Older Adults

As we grow older, we all face retirement, the loss of friends and loved ones, physical limitations and other life-altering changes. Through our older adult services, we use a holistic approach to help older adults enjoy the highest quality of life possible. We treat symptoms of stress, depression and complications of dementia, as well as affective and adjustment disorders.

Physicians who specialize in geriatric psychiatry and geriatric medicine direct treatment. Often, psychological problems are related to acute or chronic physical problems or limitations. Therapeutic programming is tailored to help each patient maximize daily living skills and to adjust to any limitations. When appropriate, patients are taught compensatory skills. Dynamic group therapies address issues common to older adults. Throughout treatment, patients are encouraged to discuss their feelings and issues.

Inpatient Program

Our older adult inpatient program is designed to help individuals who require acute treatment and constant monitoring or supervision and who are not able to function independently. The patient's medical status, level of functioning and necessary supports are key areas of evaluation.

We use a multidisciplinary treatment team approach, along with specialized services to ensure that patients benefit from flexible programming and individualized attention. There are therapies designed especially for patients who have restricted mobility or are bedfast. Our goal is to prevent withdrawal and to keep patients involved in what is going on around them. Therapies focus on socialization, reality orientation, re-motivation and alternative activities to counter the inevitable feelings of frustration and isolation.

Outpatient Program

Patients who can function independently but need help working through problems can benefit from outpatient services offered at our affiliated satellite facilities. People who are under the care of a psychiatrist or family care physician are often referred for diagnostic evaluation, consultations on medication and individual, group or family counseling.
