Musculoskeletal Oncology

With the largest orthopedic surgical oncology team in the state, Indiana University Health University Hospital and IU Simon Cancer Center provide comprehensive care for patients with benign and malignant musculoskeletal conditions.

On the team are two of only three fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons in Indiana who specialize in treating tumors of the extremities, Daniel Wurtz, MD, and Judd Cummings, MD. Both physicians are recognized for their expertise in treating patients of all ages and they work closely with various other cancer specialists-including radiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists-to develop the most effective treatment plan for each patient.

Dr. Wurtz and Dr. Cummings evaluate and treat patients with tumors that originate in the bone or soft tissues, as well as those with tumors that have spread from other parts of the body (e.g., breast, lung, prostate or kidney). And they treat patients with skeletal problems related to the spread of multiple myeloma.

The program's treatment approach is based upon meeting several goals, including making an accurate diagnosis, providing multi-disciplinary care, alleviating pain and maintaining limb function. As experts in reconstructing soft tissue and bone, they use a number of state-of-the-art limb-salvaging surgical procedures.
