Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Indiana University Health offers a broad range of cosmetic and reconstructive surgical procedures, some of which are not offered anywhere else in the state.
Patients who wish to look as young as they feel may choose cosmetic plastic surgery such as a face lift, brow lift, body contouring or liposuction. Patients who have suffered a traumatic injury, severe burns, or have problems following a previous surgery, may need to undergo reconstructive surgery to regain functionality. Similarly, patients who have overcome cancer may benefit from surgical procedures such as breast or skin reconstruction.
At Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital, our highly trained surgeons are experts in their field and use the latest techniques, including advanced microvascular surgery and trauma reconstruction using a free flap surgery. We also offer deep interior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction for patients who have had a mastectomy. Access to a world-renowned hospital featuring multi-specialty care and nationally ranked physicians helps provide safe and successful outcomes.
As a comprehensive plastic surgery group housed in a major hospital, we have the experience and facilities to offer every type of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery available.

Most women opt for breast reconstruction following complete or partial mastectomy and lumpectomy due to breast cancer. Our surgical options include microsurgery with DIEP flaps, thigh flaps, latissimus (back muscle) and skin expansion with implant.
IU Health Methodist Hospital is home to one of the only group of doctors in Indiana performing this very specialized surgery using a patient’s own fat tissue for breast reconstruction. As a more natural type of reconstruction, DIEP flaps are often the best option for women who have scar tissue left over from mastectomy or for women who have undergone radiation therapy following cancer. We use fat tissue from the patient’s own abdomen leaving the muscle in tact. DIEP allows surgeons to reconstruct breast tissue that will grow and age with the patient and retain a natural consistency.
Breast reconstruction through placement of implants is a viable option for women who need or wish to avoid flap surgery. Women who choose implant-based reconstruction may want to avoid scars on their abdomen or may want to avoid a major surgery due to age or other medical problems. Implant reconstruction is also a good option for patients with congenital breast deformities.
