Patients may be referred to Indiana University Health Transplant by their specialty care physician or primary care physician. Physicians should call 800.622.4989 and ask to speak with an organ transplant coordinator or email firstname.lastname@example.org to begin the qualification process for our program.
The coordinator will request demographic data, past medical history, current health history, social history to assess support systems and compliance to medical therapy, recent test reports and insurance information from the referring physician and/or the office staff.
A financial counselor will contact the patient’s insurance company to verify transplant benefits and will identify any problems related to insurance coverage. Our coordinator will then call for further information and will answer any initial questions.
Once insurance has given approval for a patient to be evaluated and transplanted at IU Health, a coordinator will call to schedule a consult with one of our transplant physicians. The appointment usually lasts one to two hours. The transplant surgeon will review the medical records and X-rays, obtain a history from the patient, perform a limited physical exam and discuss transplantation with the patient and family.
If the doctor feels a patient is a good transplant candidate and they wish to pursue transplantation, a transplant coordinator will schedule an evaluation. A formal transplant evaluation is necessary to determine risk factors for undergoing organ transplantation.
