Dr. Florentius Kipchirichir Koech - "The Challenges of Managing Traumatic Brain Injuries"
Dr. Koech is Head of Neurosurgery at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. He serves as co-director of the Neurosurgery Training Program at the University of Nairobi. Dr Koech has clinical interests in neurotrauma, spine surgery, and cerebrovascular surgery.
Dr. Koech completed general surgery and neurosurgical training at The University of Nairobi/Kenyatta National Hospital. In 2007 he completed neurosurgery fellowship training at the Alfred Hospital/Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. Upon his return to Kenya, he was appointed consultant neurosurgeon at MTRH and head of the neurosurgery unit. In 2008, he initiated the first and successful neurosurgery project at MTRH where four neurosurgeons from the USA and Nairobi participated.
Dr. Koech’s current focus is the establishment of a modern neuroscience center at MTRH that will house an ultramodern intensive care unit, adult/pediatric wards, two neurosurgical operating suites, diagnostic unit with MRI, CT, and angiographic suites, research labs, and a teaching center for nurses and medical students. He has published several papers in international peer reviewed journals and has presented his work at international meetings. His recent achievements include organization of the 5th Neurosurgery Project with Indiana University (Oct 2012), Co-Director of Neurosurgery Training-University of Nairobi (Jul 2012), organization of 4th Neurosurgery Project with Duke University (Oct 2011), and establishment of Neurosurgery Ward and HDU (Mar 2011).
