Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an important imaging technology that allows doctors to diagnose a variety of neurological conditions, monitor changes in the brain and determine appropriate treatments. 3 Tesla MRI, or 3T MRI, is currently the gold standard in neuro-imaging. Tesla refers to the strength of the magnetic field. With 3T MRI, a scan with three-dimensional images can be done in less than 30 minutes. In the past, a scan could take two to three times that long. 3T MRI also picks up more signals from tissues and organs, resulting in sharper, clearer images.
Indiana University Health Neuroscience features three 3T MRI scanners devoted to clinical use. This advanced technology allows patients to benefit from faster, more accurate diagnoses and more successful treatments.
IU Health Neuroscience uses 3T MRI to evaluate patients with a number of neurological conditions, including:
- Brain laceration or skull fracture
- Brain or spinal tumor
- Multiple sclerosis
