Today, U.S. News & World Report released its 2017-2018 ‘Best Hospitals’ rankings and ‘Best Hospitals for Common Care’ ratings, naming Indiana University Health among the nation’s top hospitals for the 20th consecutive year. According to the U.S. News rankings, IU Health is the No. 1 ranked hospital in Indiana and Indianapolis and is the only nationally ranked adult hospital in the state.
“IU Health is honored to be recognized as the state’s top destination, demonstrating our team’s strong commitment to delivering the best care possible” said Jonathan Gottlieb, MD, executive vice president and chief medical executive of IU Health. “These rankings provide helpful information for patients, families and other healthcare professionals seeking complex care and provide one potential source to help inform these important decisions.”
For the 2017-2018 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. Fewer than 4 percent of the evaluated hospitals emerged with at least one nationally ranked clinical specialty program. IU Health stands among an elite group of only 37 hospitals to earn national rankings in seven or more clinical specialties.
For 2017-18, IU Health achieved national rankings in the following seven clinical specialty areas for adults (with respective ranking out of 50):
- Cardiology & Heart Surgery—49th
- Neurology & Neurosurgery—30th
IU Health received high ratings in seven out of nine procedures and conditions included in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Common Care ratings. High performing procedures and conditions include heart bypass, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, knee replacement, lung cancer surgery, colon cancer surgery, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.
The annual Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 28th year, are part of U.S. News’ patient portal, designed to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care for life-threatening conditions or for common elective procedures.
