1000 Drops of Water Campaign launches

An IU Health La Porte Hospital Release

—Michigan City, Ind. – A wave contains thousands of drops of water, all coming together to move forward and touch the shore. Likewise, our community comes together as a whole to learn how to swim safely and have fun in the water.

Introducing the 1000 Drops of Water campaign - a fun and colorful activity for children ages 4th grade and younger. Children can review the safe swimming tips on one side of the education sheet, and color or artistically decorate the other side. Turn them into the Michigan City YMCA at Elston, or La Porte Hospital by June 1, and your artwork could be chosen as a winner to decorate the hallways leading to the pool at the Michigan City Y!

The 1000 Drops of Water campaign is the second leg of a months-long water safety campaign in Michigan City - a lakefront community where too many drownings happen among children and adults every year. Last year, La Porte Hospital contributed $100,000 to the YMCA Michigan City Elston Branch so the organization could make upgrades and maintain its pool for the community - an important resource for safe swimming. The gift also covers swim lesson scholarships for those who cannot afford swimming lessons, and swimming supplies like caps and goggles.

As part of the donation, the hospital received naming rights to the pool, but opted to invite the Michigan City community to name their own pool instead. The Home Town Swim Hero contest to name the pool has concluded and results will be revealed in June at the World's Largest Swim Lesson event at the Michigan City YMCA.

In the meantime, the 1000 Drops of Water Campaign is a way to get our community's youngest children involved in the discussion about safe swimming.

To participate, choose one of three different drop designs below. Read the lesson together as a family, and have children color the artwork on the back. Submit the completed pages to the Michigan City YMCA, or to La Porte Hospital (att: Stacey Kellogg).
