12th annual Tour de La Porte unveils new mountain bike time trial event

An IU Health La Porte Hospital Release

La Porte, Ind.–As the 12th annual Tour de La Porte (TdL) approaches, a new and exciting mountain bike time trial event is ready to be unveiled. This event, held on Aug. 24 at Soldiers Memorial Park, has been added to the annual La Porte Hospital Foundation cancer benefit event to accommodate the wide range of athletic interests within the community.

The mountain bike time trial utilizes the wooded trails already available at Soldiers Memorial Park. This course offers a challenge for skilled riders, and a video of the planned route is available on the website. This event is the first of its kind to be offered in the La Porte community for mountain bike enthusiasts.

Superintendent Brian Niksch of the La Porte Park and Recreation Department stated the mountain bike trail was established many years ago. The trail has seen increased activity after the trail markers were installed last year.

“We are excited to welcome community members and visitors to enjoy our parks,” said Niksch. “I think that people will be impressed by the trails that we have in Soldiers Memorial Park and will want to continue to take advantage of this and other parks that we have in the area.”

Advanced and intermediate riders will register at 2 pm and begin the event at 3 pm (Central times), while beginner riders will register at 3 pm and begin at 4 pm (after the advanced and intermediate riders have finished the first of two eight-mile laps). Cyclists will ride the order of check in.

TdL was initially created as a one-day cycling event to raise funds for those with cancer in La Porte and has since blossomed into a two-day event including walking, competitive running and high-caliber cycling as well. All proceeds from the event go to benefit cancer patients from within the local community.

For those interested in participating in one of these athletic events, TdL additionally offers a non-competitive 5K walk, chip-timed 5K, 10K or half marathon run, mini TdL fun run for children ages 4 to 8, road bike time trial and a distance cycling event of five to 100 miles. The public is encouraged to participate Aug. 24 to 25 and/or donate at
