INDIANAPOLIS – A pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health has been named the hospital’s new chief medical officer. The appointment of Dr. Paul Haut, who has served as the director of the Riley Stem Cell Transplant Program at IU Health, is effective immediately.
Dr. Haut is an associate professor of Pediatrics with the Indiana University School of Medicine and an accomplished researcher at the IU Simon Cancer Center. He assumes the CMO role from Dr. Jeff Sperring, who was named president and chief executive officer of Riley at IU Health in November 2011.
“Dr. Haut has been a valued and respected member of our Riley family for nearly a decade,” Dr. Sperring said. “Riley at IU Health is more than just a hospital. We want to be able to reach all families who need our expert care – across Indiana and beyond. I’m confident that Dr. Haut’s leadership and dedication will help us succeed in that direction.”
As CMO, Dr. Haut will serve as a bridge between the Riley at IU Health executive team and medical staff to fulfill the shared vision for the pediatric services. He will work to ensure a consistent standard of medical practice and clinical care not only in Indianapolis, but at Riley at IU Health affiliates statewide. Dr. Haut will oversee Riley at IU Health’s quality and safety improvements, help with physician recruitment, and support research and teaching initiatives.
“I’m excited to take on this new role and grateful to have the opportunity to continue to work with the incredible team at Riley at IU Health,” Dr. Haut said. “This is an unparalleled time of opportunity for children’s healthcare and I feel we are uniquely positioned to meet the increasing needs of children across the state of Indiana.”
Dr. Haut is a graduate of Brown University and received his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in 1990. He completed his pediatric residency at UAMS and his pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at Northwestern University. Dr. Haut and his wife, Dawn, also a pediatrician, reside in Carmel, Ind., with their son.
Prior to joining Riley at IU Health in 2002, Dr. Haut was a pediatric transplant physician at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ill.
Dr. Haut is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, as well as an active member of the American Society of Bone Marrow Transplant, the American Society of Hematology, the Children’s Oncology Group and the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium.
Riley at IU Health is Indiana’s first and only comprehensive children’s hospital. Consistently named one of the best children’s hospitals in the country, Riley at IU Health ranked in all 10 categories by U.S.News & World Report in 2011.
