An IU Health Arnett Hospital Release

—Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital will host Be The Match Drive on Saturday, August 26, from 10 am until 1 pm at 5177 McCarty Lane, entrance 5. Be The Match is a bone marrow registry drive. The event will also include activities for children and adults.

Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. For patients with blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases, a cure exists. A marrow or cord blood transplant replaces a patient’s unhealthy blood-forming cells with healthy ones, curing the patient. The cells used in transplants come from three sources: marrow, peripheral blood stem cells and umbilical cord blood. Seventy percent of patients do not have a fully matched donor in their family.

The Be The Match registry is the world’s largest donor registry, connecting patients with their donor match. It is a community of donors, volunteers, healthcare professionals and researchers who deliver cures by helping patients get the life-saving marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant they need.

To join, people need to meet age and health guidelines and be willing to donate to any patient in need. Registration involves completing a health history form and giving a swab of cheek cells.
