Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Approximately 1.2 million Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a vessel supplying the heart muscle with blood and oxygen becomes blocked, therefore restricting the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle. If a person does not seek immediate medical attention, that part of the muscle will begin to die.
As a result of its commitment to providing cardiovascular patients with a higher quality of life and improving its continuum of care, IU Health North Hospital recently received full Chest Pain Center accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). Through this accreditation process, the SCPC evaluates the care surrounding the treatment of patients who present with symptoms of a heart attack. The goal is to ensure that facilities meet or exceed measures based on improving the process for the care of the acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patient, which supports the SCPC in their mission to reduce heart attack deaths.
"Our patients receive cardiac care that is state-of-the-art and evidence based," states Toni Beymer, RN, MSN, NE-BC, Director, Cardiovascular and Critical Care Services at IU Health North Hospital. "We are pleased to receive this accreditation, which assures our patients that they are receiving only the highest quality care."
The thorough accreditation process consists of a Chest Pain workshop, Accreditation Review Specialists who provide feedback and resources, and key requirements to be fulfilled before sending a completed manual to the SCPC. Upon completion, the SCPC schedules a site visit.

About the Society of Chest Pain Centers Founded in 1998, the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC) is a non-profit international society dedicated to the belief that heart disease can be eliminated as the number one cause of death worldwide. Because we know that time translates to muscle during a heart emergency, the Society bridges EMS, emergency medicine, cardiology, nursing and other professions jointly focused upon improving timely, quality care for cardiac patients. In order to disseminate shared practices and processes in heart care the Society promotes protocol-based medicine and the adoption of process improvement science by healthcare providers, ideally delivered through a Chest Pain Center model, to address acute coronary syndrome, acute heart failure, and processes of care for the short stay acute heart failure patient. The Society of Chest Pain Centers is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. For more information on the Society of Chest Pain Centers visit www.scpcp.org.
