IU Health ranks No. 5 among 100 Healthiest Workplaces in America

National recognition validates IU Health's commitment to employee well-being

| Indianapolis—Indiana University Health stands committed to creating a healthy workplace and promoting healthy lifestyles for its team members. IU Health was recently selected as one of the "Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America" by Healthiest Employers—a leader in employee health analytics, best practices and benchmark data. The award process recognizes 100 employers nationwide that have demonstrated success and leadership in building a workplace committed to the well-being of its employees.

“To deliver the best patient care, we need to be well ourselves,” said Sheriee Ladd, senior vice president of human resources for IU Health. “IU Health created its wellness strategy to help team members improve their health and opportunities of well-being, and to support them in making better life choices.”

Healthiest Employers named IU Health the fifth healthiest company in the nation after a year-long, highly selective assessment process spanning the United States. IU Health was recognized for more than a dozen initiatives, including:

  • Low-cost, on-site fitness centers and classes, walking maps and bike racks
  • Annual employee weight loss challenges that engage team members at IU Health facilities statewide
  • Involvement with the Partnership for a Healthier America and its efforts to eliminate fried food and full-sugar beverages from its Indianapolis-area hospital cafeterias
  • A robust wellness initiative designed to help team members make healthier choices

Last year, IU Health’s weight loss challenge alone helped to encourage team members to collectively lose more than 10,000 lbs. – that is nearly 5 metric tons. The initiatives also helped one IU Health team member to lose more than 100 lbs. and encouraged another team member to improve their health to a point where they no longer need to take insulin for their diabetes.

“It’s making a difference,” said Ladd. “Every week, we hear from our team members, telling what a positive impact our wellness strategy has made in their lives. This national recognition, along with the positive feedback we’ve received from our employees, confirms that we are doing the right things. I’m thrilled for our efforts to be recognized in this way—and even happier about what it means for our team members.”

IU Health has also been named "Indiana's Healthiest Employer" for the past two years in the category of organizations with 5,000 employees or more—the largest of the award categories—by Indianapolis Business Journal.
