IU Health Saxony Hospital Receives National Nursing Award

An IU Health Saxony Hospital Release

—The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) recently announced that it is honoring Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital with its national BCEN Honorary Certification Recognition Award.

IU Health Saxony Hospital has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to encouraging nurses to earn certification. The hospital's small emergency department consists of thirteen beds, and has a nursing staff of six full-time and four part-time nurses with supplemental RN support. Since opening its doors nearly four years ago, the hospital has seen four nurses earn certification in emergency nursing. Two more are currently studying to take the exam.

IU Health Saxony congratulates its Certified Emergency Nurses (CENs):

Rhonda Day, RN, BSN, CEN Clinical Coordinator

“In order to qualify to test for certification, a nurse needs to have a current unrestricted RN license in the US and two years’ experience in emergency nursing,” says Beth Browning, RN, senior partner with the Saxony Emergency Department. “Completing the voluntary certification process is a symbol of an emergency nurse’s dedication to their profession and their patients. It also shows the hospital’s exemplary commitment to supporting its nursing staff and ensuring that patients receive the best possible care.”

IU Health Saxony nurses embraced the nursing certification as evidence of excellence. Nursing certification is an objective measure of knowledge which validates that a nurse is qualified to provide specialized nursing care.

BCEN annually recognizes one small and one large organization that has demonstrated exceptional support for promoting the process of certification in emergency nursing, flight nursing, critical care ground transport nursing and/or pediatric emergency nursing.

“It speaks volumes that Saxony is a small emergency care facility with a high level of certified nurses,” says Rhonda Day, RN, clinical coordinator in the Saxony emergency department.

In early October, a representative from the team will travel to Orlando, FL, to accept the award on behalf of the IU Health Saxony Emergency Department.
