INDIANAPOLIS – Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis will soon begin a new chapter with the opening of the first phase of its Simon Family Tower on Jan. 27, 2011.

The Riley Hospital for Children Simon Family Tower is a new 10-story, 675,000 square-foot inpatient building attached to Riley Hospital. The Simon Family Tower is designed to add capacity, increase efficiency and enhance patient satisfaction at Riley – the state's only comprehensive children's hospital. On January 27, floors seven, eight and nine of the Simon Family Tower will open, consisting of inpatient units.

"This is an incredibly exciting time for Riley Hospital," said Marilyn Cox, chief nursing officer, Riley Hospital for Children. "Finishing touches are underway and we are on track to unveil the first phase of this much anticipated expansion in January."

The Simon Family Tower will provide much needed space, as Riley operates most days at capacity. The last partial inpatient expansion at Riley was completed in 1986. Construction on the Simon Family Tower began in the summer of 2006. In November 2007, the Simon family announced a $40 million gift toward the completion of the project. Economic conditions temporarily halted the project in early 2009 and work re-started in early 2010. The Simon Family Tower is scheduled for completion in 2013.

"The Simon Family Tower stands as a prominent symbol of Riley Hospital's continued commitment to providing the highest quality health care for Hoosier children and their families," said Dan Fink, president and CEO, Riley Hospital for Children. "The Simon Family Tower enables us to not only offer our patients and families expanded access to nationally recognized levels of quality and safety in children’s health care, but also facilities designed around their needs for privacy, safety and healing."
