Non-Surgical Medically Supervised Weight Loss

Please Note: Due to the popularity of the Medically Supervised Weight Loss Programs, we are not able to currently accept new patients. You may still attend the seminar to learn about our highly successful minimally invasive surgery program.

Weight control is a medical concern. It takes a specialized bariatrician to help patients control weight and avoid the medical complications that often accompany overweight conditions.

Our program is designed for weight control success - even for those who have failed on other diets and are now discouraged. Our customized program, tailored to ages 18 to 67, offers medical monitoring, a variety of nutritional programs, behavioral strategies for lifestyle changes, physical activity and exercise, along with prescription medications when indicated.

Your first visit will include a comprehensive medical history and physical exam. Laboratory studies are reviewed. We will then test for "Body Composition" before we begin your strategic plan for weight control. Your plan will be tailored to you, and takes into consideration your food preferences, your schedule and your nutritional needs. We recommend weekly visits for faster weight loss and to help monitor any program modifications that will need to be made as you lose weight as your metabolism changes.

Nutrition Plan

You will have diet options that range from very low calorie diets and diets using the Advanced Health System (AHS) meal replacement plans, to combinations of meal replacements and food, to all food high protein ketogenic plans, to different variations on low calorie diets.

Besides tasting good, AHS nutritional food products assure optimal nutrition and increased success during weight loss. Meal replacements control portion size, provide structure, and replace poorer nutrition with better nutrition. People lose twice as much weight using meal replacements, and are more successful in maintenance.

Exercise and Activity Regimen

You will receive an individualized activity prescription. You will have options and again, we work hard to make our recommendation fit your lifestyle. We know your medical conditions and individual needs, and our exercise physiologist and fitness coach will develop a customized plan with exercises and workout routines that you can fit into your lifestyle.

Comprehensive Program

Our program at IU Health Bariatric & Medical Weight Loss is comprehensive and contains all the components necessary for long-term weight management success, including nutritional counseling, exercise, and behavior changes. We have a multidisciplinary weight loss team, including a board certified bariatrician who medically supervises every step of the program, bariatric nurses and medical assistants, dieticians, psychologists, and an exercise physiologist and Wellness Coach.

How much weight you lose depends on how much weight you want to lose and the diet plan you choose. Most clients lose about 2-3 pounds per week; some can lose 3-5 pounds per week with more aggressive approaches. After you have accomplished your weight loss goal, our maintenance program will help you maintain your weight loss and continue with healthy lifestyle changes. We will not just help you lose weight, but also help you keep it off for good.

Cost and Insurance

The cost of the program depends on which diet plan you choose, the amount of weight you want to lose, and the amount of time you’ll be in the program. If you are using our AHS meal replacement plan, we make this very affordable. Many clients actually save money using meal replacements, and spend less on the products than they were spending on food and eating out. The program will also reduce medication costs as it improves your health.

As for insurance, most people have related medical conditions (high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, etc). By using these diagnoses, your office visits will most likely be covered by your medical insurance. If you are using a diet plan with meal replacements, the nutritional products are not typically covered.
