Meet Jan

“I’ve been a big girl all my life,” says Jan.

At 378 pounds (her highest weight), Jan was tired of sleeping with a CPAP machine. She was tired of not being able to walk and shop (one of her favorite activities). She was tired of struggling just to tie her shoe.

So in 2008, Jan decided to get bariatric surgery at IU Health Bariatrics. She didn’t just lose weight. She gained self confidence. She learned to control her emotions, instead of letting food control her emotions. She didn’t have the negative feelings she used to have when going out in public. She could shop and try on clothes instead of having to order from a magazine. Most importantly, she knew when she got her blood pressure checked, it would be normal.

As Jan states, this isn’t a quick fix and it’s not easy. It takes work. But if you want to take control of your life, listen to Jan’s story and see if it inspires you to do the same.

The IU Health Bariatrics team strives to provide you with the information you need to fully understand your weight loss journey. We are there to guide you every step of the way. We also know how valuable it is to get that knowledge first hand, from those who have already been through the stages you are getting ready to experience.

That is why we would like to introduce you to some of our patients, who are generous enough to share their stories of success in leading a healthier life.
