IU Health North Hospital First in World to Achieve Successful Embryo Development with the INVOcell Device

A physician with Fertility at IU Health North Hospital is the first in the world to achieve successful embryo development with Medelle Corporation's new INVOcell device. The device allows for fertilization and embryo development to occur within a woman's body, rather than in the lab.

"This technology represents an exciting and important new treatment option for infertility," said Leo M. Bonaventura, MD, reproductive endocrinologist. "This device allows fertilization to occur intravaginally, so conception occurs inside the female. This device may help us provide positive outcomes for many infertile couples wanting to have children."

The INVOcell device is designed to be filled with culture medium to which sperm and eggs are added. The device is then placed with a retention system in the vagina for three days where the vaginal environment supports egg fertilization and embryo development. At the end of three days, the device and the retention system are removed and the embryos are retrieved and placed in the uterus for the purpose of achieving pregnancy.
