  • Gestational diabetes (GDM)
  • Intensive insulin management
  • Insulin pumps
  • Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)
  • Pre-diabetes
  • Diabetes medication management
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy

IU Health Diabetes Centers are committed to providing the highest quality patient care. The Centers have formal recognition by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for Quality Self-Management Education. In 2008 we worked with more than 4,000 outpatients in 14,000 visits through individual instructions, diabetes classes and medication management.

Inpatients referred for diabetes education are instructed on basic survival skills. For continuation of care and comprehensive education after discharge, patients are encouraged to schedule an appointment at IU Health North Hospital or one of the other twelve IU Health Diabetes Centers locations throughout Central Indiana. There is no charge for education services.

IU Health Diabetes Centers outpatient program follows the ADA National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME). Patients are encouraged to take an active role in decision making regarding their care and to incorporate behavioral changes into their lifestyle. DSME focuses on seven self-care behaviors. These include:

  • Healthy eating
  • Being active
  • Monitoring
  • Taking medication
  • Problem solving
  • Healthy coping
  • Reducing risks

Through our education program patients gain confidence and essential knowledge and skills to manage their diabetes and optimize their metabolic control, reduce risks of complications, and improve quality of life.
