Tips for Staying Healthy
These basic precautions can help you enjoy any activity safely, says Lawrence J. Leak, MD, a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon.
- Prep yourself: Warm up, cool down, and stretch. These prevent injuries.
- Get schooled: Poor technique in repetitive sports such as tennis can cause injury quickly. If you're having pains, get professional lessons.
- Do sport-specific training: Target the muscles you use for your sport. If you golf, include all the muscles you use to hit a ball in your strength training routine. But remember to train all of the major muscle groups to reduce your risk of injury.
- To avoid injuries from falling, work on your balance: Practice standing on one foot.
