Indiana University Health Heart & Vascular Care, Emergency Medicine and emergency transport personnel in south central Indiana have formed a Level One Heart Attack Program to help reduce the time it takes to receive treatment for a heart attack. The Level One Heart Attack Program can improve outcomes for patients experiencing a heart attack by rapidly activating a specially trained heart care team.
The Level One Heart Attack Program ensures that people experiencing a heart attack are quickly identified, stabilized and transported to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital where a cardiac catheterization staff, cardiologists and other emergency medicine team members can provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Care for heart attack begins with emergency medical technicians and paramedics. These professionals stabilize the patient and alert the hospital that a patient is on the way. Electrocardiograms (EKGs) onboard the ambulances help monitor heart function and send this information to the cardiologist at the hospital. This advanced knowledge helps the cardiologist make quick treatment decisions and assemble the team and tools needed to deliver fast care.
The cardiopulmonary rehabilitation education and exercise program is for patients experiencing heart- or lung-related health issues. Indiana University Health Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation in Paoli offers a full continuum of care from inpatient to outpatient services, as well as testing acute illness to long-term health maintenance.
The goals of the program are to decrease the known risk factors for coronary artery disease and pulmonary disease; to reduce anxiety, which is often associated with chronic illness; and to improve exercise tolerance and cardiovascular fitness.
Prior to entering IU Health Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, each participant undergoes an extensive examination that may include any or all of the following: a physical assessment and medical history, graded exercise testing (stress test) and/or pulmonary function test, evaluation of body composition and blood lipid determination. We develop an individualized exercise program based on these results.
During cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, you will complete education about your heart or lung health. You will also perform monitored exercise and participate in programs that help reduce your risk factors for future conditions.
