Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition

Pediatric gastroenterology is a medical specialty dealing with digestive conditions in infants, children and adolescents. At IU Health, our pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition service includes board-certified physician specialists who care for children with disorders of the digestive tract, liver and pancreas. We provide comprehensive evaluations, individualized treatment plans and extensive education for children and their families.

Digestive disorders in children can be short-term or chronic and can arise from genetic, infectious and other causes. Symptoms of digestive disorders in children can include constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain and abnormal growth. Based at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, our specialists frequently diagnose and manage conditions such as:

For some children, digestive disorders can be severe enough to require surgery. In those cases, we work with the expert pediatric surgeons of IU Health to provide comprehensive care with excellent outcomes.

Based at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University, our pediatric gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery services are highly ranked on the annual U.S.News & World Report list of Best Children’s Hospitals. Riley Hospital for Children Gastroenterology at IU Health includes 13 pediatric specialists with a wide range of expertise. We offer special programs in areas such as inflammatory bowel disease, allergic esophagitis, motility and liver conditions. Our gastroenterologists work closely with other IU Health pediatric specialists including surgeons, nutritionists and psychologists, as well as our patients’ own pediatricians and family physicians, to provide comprehensive care.

As faculty members of the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, our physicians are active in training future pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition specialists and in identifying new treatments through research. At times our involvement in clinical studies means our patients have access to medications that are not yet commercially available.
