Pediatric orthopedics is a branch of medicine dealing with conditions of the musculoskeletal system (including the bones, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage, muscles and nerves) in infants, children and adolescents. This system is the body’s support framework, key to both its stability and its vast range of movements. Because of their advanced training, pediatric orthopedic specialists are experts in evaluating and treating problems in the musculoskeletal system when its tissues are still growing. The pediatric orthopedic physicians at IU Health care for children with a wide variety of disorders, diseases and injuries. Because of our national reputation for clinical excellence in pediatric orthopedics, we see children from throughout Indiana and many other regions.

Orthopedic problems in children can be genetic, congenital, acquired or traumatic in nature. Some conditions, such as deformities, are easy to observe, but others may cause only subtle symptoms, such as intermittent pain or a slight limp. Among the conditions we routinely diagnose and treat are sports injuries, congenital deformities (such as club feet), spinal deformities (such as scoliosis), Perthes disease and infections and tumors of the musculoskeletal tissues. We also manage the musculoskeletal aspects of conditions such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spina bifida. Prompt treatment of pediatric orthopedic conditions can help children to function at their optimal levels and can often prevent problems from becoming worse.

The goal of the pediatric orthopedics specialists at IU Health is to ensure that your child’s musculoskeletal system functions as well as it possibly can. By diagnosing and treating problems of the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and other tissues we help your child to be more active and enjoy a higher quality of life. Based at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, our pediatric orthopedics team is dedicated to using the most advanced treatment methods to provide individualized care.

Our pediatric orthopedics team is highly ranked on the annual U.S.News & World Report list of Best Children’s Hospitals. Through our partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Orthopedic Surgery, we conduct research to find the most effective methods of diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions and train future pediatric orthopedic specialists. When your child needs multidisciplinary care, we have access within IU Health to experts in every major pediatric specialty.
