Routine Physical Exams

IU Health Primary Care physicians use routine physical exams to develop strong relationships with patients and help you manage your health. Regular exams allow our physicians to perform screenings to catch diseases early and ensure you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Routine physical exams are crucial in preventing many conditions, from heart disease to cancer. Through screenings, vaccinations, and education our primary care physicians supply you with the tools you need to stay well.

Furthermore, routine physical exams allow you to ask your doctor about changes in your body and bring up any concerns you may have about your health. These exams provide valuable time for you and your physician to strengthen your relationship and work as a team toward better health.

About Routine Physical Exams

During a routine physical exam you can expect the following: height and weight measurements, blood pressure, and review of your medical history. In addition, a head-to-toe comprehensive exam may be performed including evaluation of the head, neck, heart, lungs, abdomen, neurologic and dermatologic review.

FOR MEDICARE PATIENTS: A physical exam is different than the “Welcome to Medicare Visit” and the “Annual Wellness Visits.” Physical exams are not covered by Medicare.

Your physician will also ask if you have any questions or concerns about your body. During this portion of the exam, you should feel free to discuss changes in your health or ask questions about how to live a healthier lifestyle.

Based on your medical history and screening results, we may provide recommendations and resources for improving your health such as tobacco cessation materials, weight loss strategies, nutrition guides, and/or exercise routines.

Other screenings may be performed as necessary depending on your age and sex or if you are concerned about additional issues. For example, adult men may need to have a cholesterol test and prostate cancer screening, while adult women may need to have breast exams or Pap smears.

The results of many screenings are not available until a few days after the exam. At that time, you should receive your results from your doctors’ offices and be informed of any results that are a cause for concern.

Follow-up appointments may be scheduled if more testing is needed or to discuss test results.

IU Health Primary Care physicians are dedicated to helping Hoosier families receive the care they need to stay healthy. Routine physical exams allow us to share our expertise, resources and support with you as we work toward the common goal of better health. Our primary care team is composed of nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physicians. We strive to build strong relationships with you to ensure you understand your health and receive comprehensive, high-quality care.

Routine Physical Exams Treatment Information

IU Health Primary Care physicians help you be aware of your health and live a healthy lifestyle through the following services offered at routine physical exams:

“Welcome to Medicare Visit” - this is a one-time covered visit within the first 12 months you have Medicare Part B (age 65).  The visit does not include a Physical Examination and focuses more on personalized preventive service and health screenings: review of medical, social history. Depression screening, functional ability and safety, end of life planning and review of recommended health screenings are also covered in this visit.

Medicare “Annual Wellness Visit” (age 66+) is similar to the “Welcome to Medicare” visit.  It is covered by Medicare and can be performed by other staff in the office.  As required by Medicare, you will be asked to complete a Health Risk Assessment tool. This visit does not include a Physical Examination.
