Sports Physicals

IU Health Primary Care physicians are dedicated to keeping athletes in the game and performing at their best. Sports physicals allow our physicians to track students’ health and growth from year to year.

Before students participate in any sport at school, they are required to have a physical examination to ensure they are healthy enough to participate. For Indiana school sports, a pre-participation physical examination form must be completed by a physician.

Sports physicals are an important safety precaution and can also be a time to get advice from your physician on how to better perform in a sport. Adjustments in medications, such as asthma inhalers, can improve endurance. Your physician may also be able to suggest stretching or other exercises to help you avoid injury.

Physical examinations also provide a health baseline so physicians can better evaluate if there is a change in a student’s health. This baseline examination can be especially helpful following an injury such as a concussion or after a change in medication.

About Sports Physicals

During a sports physical, your physician will take a thorough medical history to try to uncover any previously undiagnosed issues. Questions may cover topics such as allergies, past injuries, medications you are currently taking, previous illnesses and family history. Students and parents should always answer these questions honestly. Some students are unwilling to discuss parts of their medical history because they are afraid it will keep them from playing the sports they love. However, it is rare for a condition to keep an athlete out of sports completely.

Next your physician will perform a physical examination. Most physicals include taking blood pressure, measuring height and weight and a vision test. In addition, your physician will check your heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose and throat. They may also test balance, flexibility and strength. The physical exam helps physicians discover any possible problems and better evaluate your health.

During the sports physical examination, student athletes should feel free to ask physicians about any health concerns they have. Growing students often have many questions about their bodies and health; our physicians can provide reliable answers.

At the end of a sports physical, your physician will sign the required forms so athletes may participate in sports. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled if any further testing is required.
