Noninvasive Cardiovascular Imaging

Echocardiography (a special type of ultrasound) is a noninvasive cardiovascular imaging procedure used to observe how your heart functions. Your physician uses this information to diagnose conditions such aneurysms, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart defects, congestive heart failure and valve disease. An echocardiogram also helps your physician develop a personalized treatment plan for you.

Technologists at Indiana University Health Radiology have extensive experience performing echocardiograms. Our expert radiologists read your images to detect signs of heart disease. We have specialists in heart imaging who recognize and diagnose a variety of heart conditions using echocardiogram images, providing accurate results that your physician uses to diagnose and treat you effectively.

In addition to adult echocardiography, our experts perform echocardiograms on children and infants. Parents bring children from all over the state to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health for testing and diagnosis.

As part of our dedication to advancing medicine, our physicians perform ongoing research in fetal echocardiography. Our work in this area contributes to the development of new technology for detecting fetal heart abnormalities before birth. Knowing about heart problems in advance helps physicians prepare before birth for treatment needed soon after a child is born.

Noninvasive Cardiovascular Imaging Treatment Information

An echocardiogram allows your physician to see the shape, size and other features of your heart. Because this test is a type of ultrasound, it shows moving pictures of your heart beating. The technologist performing the echocardiogram also takes still pictures that show important features clearly. This type of test reveals many aspects of your heart’s structure and movement. Your physician can see leaks, obstructions or problems in large blood vessels that carry blood to and from your heart.

There are two basic types of echocardiogram:
