Under a Carol White grant from the US Department of Education, IU Health collaborated with the Indianapolis Public School system to design a physical education curriculum, PE Without Boundaries. Implementing the curriculum in the IPS resulted in:
• Daily time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity increasing from less than 7 minutes to 27 minutes on average
• Significant decrease in BMI percentile, from 76.5 to 71.7.
In 2011, Indiana remained the 8th most obese state in the US, and each IU Health community has identified obesity prevention as a top need in their community. So, IU Health has extended PE Without Boundaries, offering it free of charge to any health or physical education educator who wants to augment their high school curriculum.
Our goal is to ensure the program is as engaging and effective as possible while making it easy for educators to implement.
We recommend first reviewing the original PE Without Boundaries Curriculum. Consider using the lesson materials to augment your current curriculum.
Then, we encourage you to review the collection innovative learning activites we have compiled. These will help you further amplify the learners’ engagement and the health and wellness outcomes that can put your learners on the path to lasting and meaningful healthy habits.
