Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health participates in a unique partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine, which is the second-largest medical school in the U.S. The affiliation ensures that our doctors have access to innovative therapies and technology as they care for children from throughout Indiana and the world. As the only comprehensive children’s hospital in Indiana, we also contribute to the field of pediatric medicine through our involvement in education and research. Our physicians are faculty members at the IU School of Medicine and carry out numerous studies in the search for new ways to diagnose and treat children’s health problems. Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health also helps to prepare the next generation of dedicated clinicians by serving as a teaching site for medical students, residents and fellows from the IU School of Medicine.

Department of Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine is based at Riley at IU Health and includes more than 325 faculty members. Among the pediatric subspecialties represented are cardiology, pulmonology, hematology/oncology, intensive care and neonatology. Faculty members have expertise in rare diseases and are involved in a wide range of research efforts, from studies at the cellular level to population health investigations. The department’s Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research attracts funds from the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, American Heart Association and Department of Defense.

Department of Surgery

Riley at IU Health provides the most comprehensive pediatric surgery services in the state through its relationship with the IU School of Medicine. The Pediatric Surgical Division of the school’s Department of Surgery is based at Riley at IU Health, providing skill and experience in a wide array of procedures. Areas of expertise at Riley Hospital for Children Pediatric Surgery at Indiana University Health include neonatal surgery, surgical oncology and trauma surgery, along with many more common operations. This busy service typically hosts five general surgery residents, two postgraduate pediatric surgery residents, four to five junior medical students and one or two elective senior students.

Our surgeons’ ability to care for the most severely injured children is a key reason that Riley at IU Health is designated as the state’s only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. Our connection with the Department of Surgery also allows us to offer highly specialized operations in such areas as cardiovascular surgery, transplant, neurosurgery and plastic surgery.

Department of Anesthesia

Our group of pediatric anesthesiologists is the largest in Indiana, providing general anesthesiology in the operating room, sedation during medical procedures and management of acute and chronic pain. These faculty members of the Department of Anesthesia at Indiana University School of Medicine are skilled at caring for children of all ages, from newborn to adolescent. Riley Hospital for Children Anesthesiology at Indiana University Health serves as the pediatric training center for IU School of Medicine anesthesiology residents and also teaches airway management to residents from other departments.

Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences

Riley Hospital for Children Radiology at Indiana University Health provides a full range of diagnostic and imaging services based on the advanced knowledge found within the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Indiana University School of Medicine. Our pediatric radiologists work with other physicians to diagnose disease and injury in infants, children and adolescents. Riley at IU Health is an important site for the department’s training efforts—including one of the country’s largest diagnostic radiology residency programs—and for pediatric radiology research.

Department of Emergency Medicine

Drawing on the expertise of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, Riley at IU Health operates a 24/7 emergency department serving children from throughout the state. Our board-certified emergency physicians and highly trained nursing staff care for ill and injured children with all types of urgent needs. Riley Hospital for Children Emergency Services at Indiana University Health has access to specialists in every field of pediatric medicine and surgery at all times. Due to the fact that it is Indiana’s only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and is home to the state’s only verified pediatric burn center, Riley at IU Health is well equipped to handle even the most serious pediatric emergencies. Additionally, through its partnership with IU School of Medicine, Riley at IU Health participates in one of the few physician training programs in the country that combine emergency medicine and pediatric residency.
