Nationally-ranked in all 10 categories by U.S.News & World Report – again

Riley Hospital at IU Health is honored to be ranked among the top children’s hospitals in the country by U.S.News & World Report. In 2013-14, for the third year in a row, we have been ranked in 10 out of 10 categories. We remain the only nationally ranked children’s hospital in Indiana.

In addition, we rank among the top 50 children’s hospitals in the country and eight out of ten of our specialty programs are ranked in the top 25. The following ten Riley specialties are recognized in the 2013-14 edition of U.S.News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals:

Cancer

Our team treats more than 80 percent of children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer in Indiana. We are affiliated with the IU Simon Cancer Center, the state’s only NCI designated Cancer Center for clinical care. Riley has Indiana’s only pediatric stem cell transplant program and is a Children’s Oncology Group Phase I Consortium member. Our patients are able to access the latest clinical trials and cutting edge medications all while under the care of highly skilled physicians and staff.

Cardiology & Heart Surgery

Riley is one of the highest volume pediatric cardiovascular centers in the country, and research shows higher volumes translate to better outcomes. Riley’s overall survival rate for cardiovascular surgery is significantly better than the national average. The Riley team is the only group performing pediatric heart transplantation in Indiana and the pediatric cardiac critical care team is the only of its kind in Indiana. The Riley Heart Center offers the full scope of heart-related services and treatment options.

Diabetes & Endocrinology

Our diabetes team provides medical care for approximately 2,000 children with diabetes in Indiana. The team consists of doctors, nurses, dietitians and a social worker — all of whom have special expertise in taking care of children with diabetes. The team provides both inpatient and outpatient care and works to create an individualized care plan for each patient. Riley endocrinologists also provide comprehensive care and consultative services for children with endocrine conditions throughout the state.

Gastroenterology

Ten board certified physicians lead the gastroenterology team at Riley. The team performs more than 2,000 endoscopic procedures a year and works to provide comprehensive care for children with intestinal, liver or nutritional problems. Gastroenterology issues, whether acute or chronic, affect the quality of a patient’s life. We help patients manage both common and rare gastrointestinal conditions and offer clinics specializing in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, liver disease, allergic esophagitis, short bowel, cystic fibrosis, obesity and GI motility disorders.

Neonatology

The Riley Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the only comprehensive NICU in the state and offers care by the most experienced physicians. The NICU at Riley is a Level 3C, the highest level of care designation for a NICU. In addition to excellent family-focused service, the Riley team concentrates on research and quality improvement. We are top 10 in research funding among all pediatric hospitals and have vast family-centered support services for families.

Nephrology

We provide the state's only comprehensive evaluation and treatment services for children with kidney disease or kidney failure. Our team includes pediatric nephrologists, urologists and dialysis nurses. Riley is a leader in kidney transplantation and has worked to perfect a new hemodialysis technology — continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH).

Neurology & Neurosurgery

The Riley neurology and neurosurgery teams provide comprehensive and seamless care for families. Our teams see patients from throughout the Midwest and routinely treat the most complicated issues. Committed to treating any neurological need a patient may have, the teams have developed a number of specialty clinics, including headache and other chronic needs as well as the only comprehensive pediatric surgical epilepsy program in Indiana.

Orthopedics

Patients of the Riley orthopedics program are given access to pediatric orthopedists and orthopedic surgeons who understand growth and the uniqueness of a child’s musculoskeletal system. We work side-by-side with other true experts in pediatric orthopedics, including pediatric cast nurses, physical therapists and wound care nurses. Riley is also the home of the state’s only pediatric-based sports medicine program, with the only pediatric and sports medicine-trained physician in central Indiana.

Pulmonology

The pulmonology team at Riley Hospital treats patients from throughout the Midwest and has a major focus on research into lung development and prevention of lung injury in cystic fibrosis and asthma. Our pulmonologists treat patients with breathing disorders of all kinds, including: asthma, chronic lung diseases and acute breathing problems. Another focus is our sleep disorders center and our state-of-the-art, nationally accredited sleep laboratory. We also provide specialized lung function testing for infants and children in the Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory.

Urology

Four board-certified pediatric urologists lead our urology team at Riley. The team’s initial focus is providing a diagnosis and treatment plan. If surgery is required, these physicians are highly skilled and experienced microsurgeons. The team is also nationally and internationally recognized for their commitment to the field.
