Medical Review
Anticipation, excitement, fear of the unknown; all can be present when a family receives their referral information. Adoption referrals have the potential to pull at both heart and head. The preadoption services are designed to help parents see best and worst case scenarios to help families see if their referral fits with their dream for their family. To aid parents in this process, a thorough review of referral information can be obtained. This service includes evaluation of translated medical information, developmental milestones, photos, videos and anything else a family has received. The medical director of the International Adoption Clinic and the parent(s) discuss the information together. Parents’ questions are answered and discussions of medical status, growth, development, preparation for travel, parenting tips, feeding plans, considerations for children with special needs, etc. are undertaken at that time. The family receives a written evaluation as well with an overall summary of the child based on provided materials. There is a fee for this service. The initial fee does cover review of any additional information received if the family so desires.
Psychology Review
Bringing home a child takes preparation. In addition to a medical review, some families are interested in preparing themselves emotionally and psychologically for the upcoming experience of welcoming a new child through international adoption. Specifically families who adopt toddlers or older children, children with special health care needs, and families who already have other children at home often times wish to get more information about how to prepare for this transition. A consultation with the psychologist can address questions about facilitating the transition for your child and your family, taking into consideration your individual family circumstances. Being prepared through information and reflection, and having a plan in place prior to the arrival of your new family member can decrease stress and free up your emotional resources for building a healthy relationship with your child.
